I’m James, a professional bass player, educator, and session musician based in Peterborough, UK. I’ve built my career on delivering solid, professional bass playing in both live and studio settings, working across multiple bands and genres. I perform regularly with my bands, Laketown (a contemporary country band), The Motor City Vipers (a Motown/soul band) and Midsummer Knights (a wedding/function band), bringing pocket, musicality, and presence to every performance. My playing is shaped by legends like James Jamerson, Pino Palladino, Marcus Miller, and Jaco Pastorius. Whether on stage or in the studio, I focus on precision, feel, and knowing exactly what the music needs. Beyond performing, I help serious bass players refine their craft. My lessons are structured, results-driven, and built for those looking to take their playing to the next level. I work with students of all ages, some with nearly 50 years between them, and provide clear progression plans, weekly digital resources, and tailored 1:1 sessions. My goal is simple: to make my students better musicians as efficiently as possible. If you’re looking for a professional bassist for live gigs, recording sessions, or high-level tuition, I bring experience, reliability, and a no-nonsense approach to getting results.

Students (Parents for younger students) will need to register for a free MusicTeacherNotes account. If you are a current student of mine at James Formosa Bass and haven't registered your MusicTeacherNotes account, please click the orange button below. You will use the studio code (4TAWJ) to connect your family account to my teacher account.
MusicTeacherNotes is free for students. They have an upgradable option available, called the Gold Plan, but upgrading is not required. I can manage our music lessons whether you use their free account or their Gold account.
MusicTeacherNotes helps music teachers manage their students and helps students learn music faster. By empowering parents and students to get much more out of private music lessons, learning music becomes a better experience for everyone.
